What they are & how to stop them
Panic attacks are known to be one of the scariest and most uncomfortable experiences that a human being can go through. In many cases panic attacks seem to come out of the blue and first time sufferers will often call emergency services or even end up in a hospital in fear of having a heart attack or of dying (only to be told that it was anxiety or a panic attack).
Although panic attacks are not harmful in the majority of cases, they can severely impact a person’s capacity to live a normal life, and can often cause phobias to develop in connection with certain places or situations (such as the local supermarket or work place) where they have previously experienced anxiety or an attack.
Panic attacks are experienced differently by different individuals, but common symptoms include:
– Increased heart rate & palpitations
– Dizziness
– Tingling in hands, arms or legs
– Tightness in the chest area
– Fear of suffocation
For an extensive list of symptoms, see panic attack symptoms.
Panic attacks in almost all cases are brought on by mental, physical or psychological exhaustion, rendering the body susceptible to mental illness. Once the body or mind is depleted in any of these areas, even the slightest trigger can set off a fight or flight response, which is what a panic attack essentially is. When triggered, the body begins releasing hormones such as adrenaline into the blood stream which in most cases causes a considerable increase in a person’s heart rate and for blood to move to vital areas of their body. Without a ‘justifiable’ cause for this, such as running, the experience is highly uncomfortable. For more on causes, see panic attack causes.
Treating panic attacks can be done fast and effectively if the correct information and method is provided – in most cases no medical assistance is required and the method can be put into practice anywhere at any time. For more on treatments that are used, see panic attack treatment.
